iPad 1-to-1 Program and FAQs

  1. What is a 1:1 iPad program?
A 1:1 iPad program simply means that every student and teacher have direct access to the same type of personal computing device, the iPad.
  2. How did you decide on iPads?
St. Lucy’s began researching 1:1 programs in 2015. We considered several different devices including Chromebooks, PCs, MacBook Pros and iPads. We consulted a variety of other school technology programs, visited campuses, watched students with devices in action and tested several models. After our research we concluded that the Apple iPad provides a mobile computing device best-suited to our educational environment and curriculum at St. Lucy’s. Read more here:

  3. How will St. Lucy’s Priory High School cover the cost of the 1:1 iPad Program?
Each St. Lucy’s student will be charged an annual 1:1 iPad Program Fee for participating in the program. The 2020-2021 fee has been set at $395 per student. This technology fee is due prior to student orientation when iPads are issued to students.
  4. Why is the fee $395 when I could buy an iPad for less than that?
The St. Lucy’s iPad Program fee includes more than just the use of the device, apps, and tax; it also includes the training, enterprise mobile device management software (JAMF), network infrastructure support and improvements, and other infrastructure enhancements required to make this program a success including teacher iPads, student and teacher training, content filtering firewall and a private high speed dedicated line for internet.
  5. Do students only use eBooks, or will they also use traditional textbooks?
St. Lucy’s is working to provide parents and students with the most cost effective options for school textbooks. We are committed to adopting electronic textbooks when available and appropriate. The academic department chairs, with the approval of the Assistant Principal, select materials for department instruction, including eBooks and traditional textbooks. E-books also offer readers rich online supplemental materials that may not otherwise be possible from a traditional textbook. The 2020-2021 school year 70% or more of our textbooks will be eBooks. Most of them are $15 or less. This will help offset the iPad expense to our families. We estimate the textbook savings to average around $200 to $300 per year.
  6. Can I sell the eBooks at the end of the school year?
Because of the licensing agreement Apple has made with the textbook publishing companies eBooks are only licensed to one person and the ownership is non-transferable. This brings the cost of each book down significantly.
  7. What type of iPad will students receive?
Your daughter will receive an iPad. System specifications are as follows:
  8. What accessories will be needed with the iPad?
All students need to supply their own protective case and screen covering. We suggest that the case protects the corners of the iPad as this is the easiest place to break. An inexpensive pair of earbuds is required. We also recommend a glass screen protector (from Anker). The iPad battery should last throughout the regular school we day but we suggest purchasing a portable battery for emergency charging at school. Many student will want to add a keyboard, but it is not required. See our full
    Recommended Products List at Amazon.com.
  9. Where can I learn about the iPad?
You can learn about the iPad
    directly from Apple.
  10. My student already has an iPad. Will they be able to use that one?
Students are not allowed to bring their own iPads, laptops or mobile devices to campus. This is due to the specific configurations of devices as well as online access to our protected wireless network and the impracticality of management of non-school owned devices. Apple and JAMF do not allow us to manage iPads if they are not purchased through the school.
  11. May students opt out of using the iPad altogether?
Requiring every St. Lucy’s student to use this school-issued iPad assures continuity in the classroom and a successful 1:1 Learning Initiative. St. Lucy’s will utilize a Mobile Device management suite installed on each iPad. The MDM, JAMF, allows us to register each device on our server, where we can control the configuration of the device, and remotely lock/wipe, send out over the air software updates and other functions to manage all our mobile devices.
  12. Why will the iPad be replaced?
St. Lucy’s has worked closely with the Apple Education team to develop a program which will work best in our environment. Specifically:
    • With the regular updates to the iOS (operating software) , devices eventually become outdated. Receiving the equipment directly from Apple provides the school flexibility as our program continues to develop and we can make choices each year based on what new technology is available.
  13. Who owns the iPad?
The iPad is the property of St. Lucy’s Priory High School. The school retains the right to require immediate return of any iPad at any time, and for any reason.
  14. Will my student learn about appropriate use and digital citizenship with the iPad?
Yes, all students are expected to become familiar with and follow the guidelines of digital citizenship. Read more about
Digital Citizenship at Common Sense Media.
  15. What happens when my student graduates, do they get to keep the iPad?
When a student graduates they will have the option of purchasing the iPad. This cost varies each year, but it will be around or slightly lower than the current market value.
  16. Can my daughter use her existing Apple ID?
Yes, all students must use their own Apple ID. If they don’t have one they will need to create one. All purchases (eBooks, etc.) made using a student’s Apple ID will belong to that Apple ID, so your student can take them after graduation. You must NOT use your @student.stlucys.com email for this ID.
  17. When will students receive their iPads? Will there be any training for students on how to use the iPads?
All students will receive their iPad before the start of 2020-2021 school year. We have developed training material to get students started with their iPads that includes using the iPad, purchasing and downloading apps and eBooks, as well as digital citizenship.
  18. Is the information on the iPad backed up?
There are a variety of backup options for iPads. We recommend students use iCloud, as it backs up automatically when the iPad is plugged into power and connected to the Internet.
  19. Can students charge iPads at school?
The iPad is required to be fully charged at the beginning of school. Charging stations are not provided at SLPHS. A fully charged iPad should last the entire school day. If necessary, an option is to carry your own small
    portable battery.
  20. Do students get to take them home at night and during vacations?
The full benefits of the program can only be realized if students can use these devices both at school and at home. Students will be responsible for all software updates that Apple may require from time to time.
  21. Can I leave the iPad at school overnight?
No. You must take your iPad with you when you are not on campus. Do not leave the iPad at school in your locker.
  22. How do I connect my student’s iPad to my home network?
You will need to have a wireless access point/router at home to access internet or email. iPads will still function in some capacity without this connection.
Apple’s directions are here. Because of numerous possible configurations, it is advisable to contact your service provider for further assistance.
  23. How do I connect my student’s iPad to my home printer?
    There are some newer
wireless enabled printers that are compatible with iPads. If you have this type of printer your iPad should find it without any configuration on the iPad.
  24. Is the iPad restricted solely for school purposes?
Students are encouraged to integrate their iPad into their everyday life. All content must be appropriate and not violate any school policies. The iPads will be pre-loaded with some apps, but we do want students to be able to load or purchase their own for educational purposes.
  25. What do we do if the iPad is broken, lost or stolen?
If your iPad is accidentally broken: Students will need to drop off the broken iPad and pick up a loaner iPad from the Main Department. A $100 fee will be charged for the first incident. A $300 fee will be charged for a second incident. For any other subsequent incidents, the cost of repair is the responsibility of the student. You may not have the iPad repaired outside of St. Lucy’s because any non-Apple repairs will void the Apple contract. If your iPad is lost or stolen: Sign in to icloud.com from any web browser on a Mac or PC and use the "Find My iPad" app. If the iPad cannot be recovered, parents will be charged a $450 fee (with a written police report). Replacement cost will be discussed with administration.
  26. Do you supply loss/theft insurance?
St. Lucy’s Priory High School does not supply loss/theft insurance for iPads. Check with your insurance carrier to see if they cover it. Replacements must be purchased through St. Lucy’s Priory School in order to remain in compliance with Apple for Education and our Mobile Device Management System.
  27. Are the students able to access inappropriate content at St Lucy’s Priory High School?
School’s web filtering prevents inappropriate and/or malicious web content while students are connected at school. When connected to WiFi in other places, students have to use the Internet responsibly. Parents are responsible for monitoring their daughter’s use of the iPad off campus.
  28. Will Apps be included with the iPad?
    Yes.
SLPHS Core Apps will be auto-loaded onto the iPad upon first login. Additional educational apps on our essentials list will be available free of charge in the Self Service app on the iPad. All required apps will be included in the cost of the program. Students can add their own apps from the App Store.
