Applications
Applications for the University of California and the California State University are available at their respective websites, www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply and www.csumentor.edu. Applications for UC must be filed between November 1 and November 30. Applications for CSU must be filed between October 1 and November 30. Some CSU campuses may be open later, but there are no guarantees. Most other colleges, including community colleges, will post their applications on their individual websites. A handy resource for locating the website of any American college or university is www.clas.ufl.edu/CLAS/american-universities.html. Over three hundred private colleges and universities will accept the Common Application in lieu of their own. If a student is applying to more than one of these, it would be a great timesaver to utilize this service. For more information, see www.commonapp.org. A few private school applications are available in the guidance room (200B).

The counselors provide application workshops at lunch. Counselors also are willing to check applications, including essays, on request. Tips for writing essays are available in 200B.

Letters of Recomendation
Many colleges require letters of recommendation as a part of their acceptance procedures. A student who wishes a faculty member to write a recommendation should provide a request form with a stamped, addressed envelope and allow a minimum of two weeks for the teacher or counselor to complete the letter or standardized form. A list of the student’s interests and activities (“brag sheet”) is also required. Request forms and brag sheets are available in 200B.
