Guidance Department

The administration and faculty of St. Lucy’s recognize the importance of providing effective personal, career and college guidance for each student. Various programs in the areas of high school orientation, academic guidance, career and college guidance and personal issues are provided in an effort to meet student needs.

St. Lucy’s extends opportunities for both individual and group academic guidance to all students. Extensive personal counseling is not within the scope of the school’s program. If a student is in need of consistent professional help, the counselor may be of assistance in suggesting possible alternatives to parents.

The guidance staff is available to all students and parents. Students and parents are encouraged to arrange counseling appointments as needs arise.

Students are assigned to counselors alphabetically by last name:

Mrs. Charles (A - I)

Ms. Leiva (J - Z)

NAVIANCE

Naviance is the comprehensive, web-based guidance program utilized by St. Lucy’s Guidance Department. Guidance services, especially regarding career and college planning, are available to both students and parents on the Naviance website. Log on to http://connection.naviance.com/slphs for career surveys, college search, college applications, and student G.P.A., rank and test scores, as well as valuable links to dozens of other resources. ALL COLLEGE APPLICATIONS are to be done through Naviance.

The Guidance Department E-mailed log-in access codes to parents in the spring of 2010. If a parent needs to retrieve that information, please contact your daughter’s counselor. Freshman parents will receive their access information early in the second semester.

COLLEGE SPEAKERS AND FAIRS

Seniors, juniors and second semester sophomores may attend presentations during the school day by representatives of various colleges and universities. These presentations greatly aid the decision-making process and help the student become a better-informed consumer. Similarly, college fairs provide the opportunity for students and parents to meet with college representatives at one time in one place. Damien sponsors a college fair each fall. National College Fairs are held each spring at area convention centers. The Guidance Department will inform students about these fairs as the details become available.

The schedule for school-based college speakers is available on the Naviance website from the student’s home page, click on the college tab. Upcoming visits are listed. Click on the visit to see details. If a student has listed that college as a prospective college on her Naviance account, she will receive an E-mail telling her about the upcoming visit.

If a student wishes to sign up for a speaker, she can click on “view all upcoming college visits” and then click on “sign up” next to the college name. An information page will pop up, and she can click the “sign me up” box at the bottom.

To get clearance from her teacher to attend the speaker’s presentation, she must either print out the E-mail she received, or print out the information page that pops up when she clicks on “information” next to the college name. The student should take the E-mail or information page to the teacher THE DAY BEFORE the presentation and have the teacher sign the paper. This signed paper constitutes the pass the student will need in order to be admitted to the presentation.

STUDENT CONFIDENCES
Guidance counselors, teachers, retreat leaders and other school personnel will respect the verbal or written confidences of students, except in cases where the health or safety of the student or others is involved.

LEARNING PROBLEMS AND DISABILITIES

Although the school does not have the resources or personnel to assist students with serious learning disabilities, every feasible effort is made to accommodate students with identified learning disabilities. Parents who know or suspect that their daughter may have a learning disability should contact her counselor during freshman year or as soon as possible. Counselors will inform teachers as to the nature of the disability and provide suggestions for assisting the student’s learning. Classroom accommodations must be in place for four months prior to requesting assistance in standardized testing. The first test is in October of sophomore year.

PEER COUNSELORS

Seniors who are members of the Applied Psychology class receive training in peer counseling and are available to students.
